Connecting educators and students with education in virtual reality, augmented reality, and extended reality

Teachers can bring lessons to life, teach new skill sets, support socialization through multi-player experiences, bridge cultures, and more. VR is the virtual ticket to endless possibilities in the classroom, further developing and complementing more traditional methods and lesson plans. In this webinar, I’ll report back on a pilot course ran between April-May 2021 which focussed on teaching productive aspects of English for Academic Purposes via virtual reality . The course used a special app called Immerse to plan and deliver the lessons. The student team develops the VR project while learning both the subject matter content and the programming skills necessary to develop it. For instance, visual learners can learn by seeing simulations, while auditory learners can listen to audio recordings of lectures. Kinesthetic learners, meanwhile, can interact directly with virtual objects. With the help of immersive technologies, students can gain a richer understanding of the world around them—and prepare for success in the real world.

As the TPACK framework suggests, technology integration requires much more than technical skills (An & Reigeluth, 2011; Koehler & Mishra, 2008; Mishra & Koehler, 2006). Recognizing the importance of the links among technology, pedagogy, and content, the VR professional development programs should provide teachers with VR integration opportunities in authentic contexts. The results revealed a positive correlation between the frequency of VR use and the level of VR integration. In other words, teachers who are familiar with the VR technology attempt to use it more often. As mentioned earlier, most of the participants were at the early stages of VR technology integration. Less than 30% of the participants felt comfortable with the VR technology and could use it as an instructional tool in the classroom .
